The EIPHNH residential building - /4th century AD/ is a cultural monument of national and of world importance. The peristyle residential building with floor mosaics is one of the best in ancient Pilippopolis.
The mosaic, inlaid in the floor of the great central hall of the residential building Eirene, and featuring a female portrait with the inscription EIPHNH, dates from 4th – 5th centuries. It contains geometric, vegetal, and figured images, executed in a rich gamma of colours and hues. In the rectangular space, two compositions are distinguished by squares, with a circle inserted in each square, and an image inside each circle. |
In the center there is a hexagon, with a female image inside it, executed in opus vermiculatum, and the inscription EIPHNH, surrounded by six squares with triangles among them. There is also a wide dividing band between the two squares. The band contains a black-and-white rhomboid grille of a simple inclined swastika -meander. Over the northern square mosaic panel, located over the water drain, an eight-walled marble structure (fountain) was added. North of it (seen from the entrance) a greeting inscription is inserted in the mosaic. |
In the western central square a circle is inserted, which contains a big polychromatic rosette, filled with small triangles. In the center of the rosette there is a cantaros vase inside a small round medallion. |
